Who can carry out an asbestos survey?
The client must appoint someone competent for the survey type and premises. HSE strongly recommends using an organisation accredited for asbestos surveying and points buyers to the UKAS directory, but the current scope and proposed people still need checking.
Check my situationVerify three layers of evidence
Check the organisation and its current accreditation scope, the named surveyor’s training and comparable experience, and the method and report that will be used on your premises. A logo or provider claim alone is not the full appointment check.
- Check the current UKAS directory entry and scope for the required survey type.
- Ask who will attend and what comparable buildings and projects they have surveyed.
- Review a redacted report for plans, photographs, exclusions, sampling and assessments.
What to do next: Record evidence at the date of appointment and verify insurance, impartiality, capacity, laboratory arrangements and complaint process directly. Vendor Atlas records public evidence but does not approve providers.
Organisation evidence
UKAS accreditation for inspection bodies is a strong, independently assessed signal when its current schedule covers the work being bought. Check the official directory rather than relying only on a website badge.
Accredited scope can differ between organisations and can change. Record the directory result with the quotation and contract.
Named-person competence
Training such as BOHS survey qualifications can support competence, but relevant practical experience, quality supervision and the ability to understand the project remain necessary.
- Named lead surveyor
- Comparable premises experience
- Intrusive-survey planning experience
- Current training and authorisation
- Quality review and escalation
Method and independence
The survey plan should resolve access, exclusions, sampling, laboratory analysis, reporting and urgent findings. Where the same provider offers removal, ask how impartial survey judgements and later commercial recommendations are separated.
The appointment should make responsibility for damage, reinstatement, occupancy controls and unexpected materials explicit.
